Significance of the Canary: Years ago, canaries were taken into coal mines as an early warning system for miners. When the canary stopped singing, the miners knew that the air quality was dangerous to their health and they had to get out of the mine. We believe that prevention of exposure to workplace hazards should be the priority, and that we have the right to not work in dangerous circumstances. The canary has been taken out of the cage to reflect that right.
